Markel hires senior war and terrorism underwriter and head of terrorism, North America
Markel International, London
Markel International has hired Ben Wakeham as senior war and terrorism underwriter and head of terrorism, North America.
The new arrival marks Markel International’s entry into the US war and terrorism market, where Wakeham will be instrumental in growing and leading a team in the US, which will allow the organisation to serve clients locally.
To achieve this objective, Wakeham will continue building on the success and foundations of Markel’s war and terrorism team, by developing strategies to not only scale growth, but also strengthen the organisation’s leadership position in the domestic US terrorism market.
Reporting to Ed Winter, senior underwriter and head of terrorism at Markel International, Wakeham will be based at Markel’s London office for 12 months, before moving to the US next year.
Previously, Wakeham was employed as assistant vice president and head of property and terrorism at Hiscox USA, Los Angeles, where he managed and grew the terrorism portfolio to be one of the largest in the market. He also provided leadership and mentoring to Hiscox’s national team of underwriters.
“We are pleased to have Ben on the team,” said Winter. “In his new position, Ben will be responsible for establishing and growing our presence in the US war and terrorism market, by providing clients access to products that offer greater protection from an insurer they know and trust.”
Winter added: “With his strong track record in delivering and executing results, we are certain that Ben will be able to take our war and terrorism portfolio to the next level, while providing an unrivalled service to clients.”
