Build the future: James Hughes apprenticeship story

09 February 2021

Markel International, London

What do you enjoy most about your role?

My role is completely new to me, so currently I am enjoying every part of it as I am learning each day and coming across new businesses each day as well as brokers from around the world.

What attracted you to the insurance industry?

I have grown up around people that have always worked within the industry which I believe plays a massive part in why I wanted to get involved. What also attracted me was how the insurance industry is forever changing with regards to new products and technology entering the world as we speak e.g. driver-less cars and boats and I think that it will be interesting to see how insurance companies are going to have to adapt to be able to cover such products and look at the different risks involved.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship at Markel?

Go for it! I have felt nothing but welcomed into my team. You will start learning from day 1 and gain the knowledge and skills needed to work within the industry. Markel will support you throughout your apprenticeship and give you any help or advice you need.

Describe your Markel experience in 3 words.

Interesting, enjoyable, diversified.

What is something that’s surprised you about your role? / something that you didn’t expect?

Before I started working within underwriting, I thought that it only involved writing a premium and sending it off. Now that I have been working for a little while, I have realised that is not the case and there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes.

What is the biggest challenge you've faced in your role?

Overall, I think starting a new job from home is a challenge. If I was in the office, I’d be able to turn round and ask questions to my colleagues whereas from home, I have to e-mail or call my colleagues just to ask a question. It’s difficult trying to train someone like myself from home because you end up having to share your screen etc and when there is I.T issues, its game over!

What is your greatest achievement so far?

Not so much an achievement, but I feel like I’m learning relatively quickly thanks to my team. I’m excited to carry on learning each day and progress within my role.
